Manhattan ward maps from 1683 to 1913

Accession ACC-1983-041. Unprocessed - RG 035. Department of Finance

Description

The accession consists of ward maps of Manhattan showing boundary lines and topographic features as wards were added and redivided from 1683 to 1913. There are approximately fifty 4 x 6 inch cards on which are drawn in blue, black, and red ink the outlines and main features (such as streams and other bodies of water, principal streets, etc.) of the twenty-four wards in Manhattan that existed between 1683 and 1913. The cards are well drawn and almost constitute small works of art. However, they are in fragile condition and are beginning to break at the edges. The maps give details not readily available to researchers attempting to determine exact ward boundaries at different points in time. Arranged numerically by ward number and thereunder chronological by date of new ward boundaries.
