Reuben A. Lazarus collection of the Charter Revision Commission and the Seabury Commission investigation of Mayor Walker
Description
The accession consists of a variety of Charter Revision Commission files and publications collected or produced by Special Counsel Reuben A. Lazarus. Many of the materials are annotated. Lazarus, a constitutional lawyer, held a variety of positions including Special Counsel to the New York City Charter Revision Commission. He also sat at Mayor Jimmy Walker's counsel table when the Mayor faced removal charges in 1932. Principal subjects found in the Lazarus accession include charter revision, home rule, and accompanying revisions to the New York City Administrative Code. Approximately half of the material relates to the Seabury Commission investigation of Mayor Walker, such as transcripts, news clippings, photocopies of evidence, and items marked with exhibit numbers. One artifact found with evidence materials, a white cellulose collar, was without explanation. The Municipal Archives has another collection of official Lazarus materials (old box numbers: 15157 to 15165, 13433 to 13488, and others not identified). See also ACC1964-105 and ACC2009-084.
