Description

Accession contains correspondence to Mayor Koch (3 cubic feet), some of which contain matters of legality, from the Office of the Counsel. Arranged alphabetically by name of the correspondent, the series includes the letter, enclosures if any, and a response from the Office of the Counsel to the Mayor, either from Deputy Counsel to the Mayor, Dean L. Silverberg, or Counsel to the Mayor, Patrick F.X. Mulhearn. Most include the Office of the Mayor, Correspondence Services computer generated "Correspondence Tracking Sheet", which contains information such as date received, identification number, name and address of the correspondent, the person the correspondence was referred to, keyword description or subject matter, and the type of action taken. Also contains copies of a publication produced by the Mayor's Office, "Public Hearings on the tax-exempt status of non-profit organizations," June 16, 17, 1983. Volume 1, parts 1 and 2, and volume 2, parts 1 and 2 (2 cubic feet). The City, in an attempt to generate more revenue, raised the issue of definition as to what is considered charitable or educational, in order to qualify for tax exemption. This publication contains statements by representatives and supporters of non-profit organizations, in support of the organization's tax-exempt status. Arranged alphabetically by correspondent.
