Randel's map of Manhattan streets and roads for 1811
Description
Consists of a printed map of Manhattan, commissioned by the New York State Legislature in April 1807 through an "Act relative to improvements touching on the laying out of Streets and Roads in the City of New York and other purposes." It is signed into authority by Mayor DeWitt Clinton, the map's commissioners and others, including John Randel. The map is the first to show the planned and numbered street grid of Manhattan from 1st Street north to 155th Street. It shows some individual structures and no longer extant roads north of Houston Street. It also includes some topographical features. The scale is 164mm (approximately 6 1/2") to the mile. The map is 113" long by 32 1/2" wide, backed with canvas, and in good condition.
