Board of Standards and Appeals photographs for 1981 to 1984

Description

The photographs were generated by the office of the Board of Standards and Appeals. As a component of zoning case files, they document proposed changes or variations in zoning laws. The bulk of the photographs fall between 1983 and 1984. A set containing two to nine photographs of the area and building under consideration is prepared for each zoning case. Two sets remain with the file and three are discarded. This collection is comprised of the latter. The front (recto) of the photos are annotated as to location and actual site. The date is stamped on the back (verso). At this point (1985) the collection contains thirty-eight sets of photographs. Each set has two to three duplicates. Generated by the Board of Standards and Appeals, the information contained in this collection is generally reflective of its function and duties. The material is equally reflective of the history of New York City. The photographs are important as documentation of city life in the 1980s. They illustrated where New Yorkers lived, where they worked, their schools, churches, parks, homes, shops, and transportation.
