The accession consists of correspondence, memoranda, statements, reports, minutes, printed materials, notices of examination, clippings, transcripts of hearings, and notes. The material was used for administrative and reference purposes in the conduct of the Alfred E Smith Jr. Commission, formally known as the Smith Committee of the Council of the City of New York to Investigate the Municipal Civil Service Commission. The Commission was looking into irregularities in Civil Service examination and hiring practices. It was purported, in news articles of the period included in the material, that the Commission, led by Tammany Hall Democrats, representing a majority in the City Council, were attempting to discredit LaGuardia's Fusion Party administration.
