World Trade Center attack commemoration flowers for 2003

Description

On September 11, 2003, Mayor Michael Bloomberg held a memorial service at Ground Zero for the victims of the World Trade Center (WTC) attack on September 11, 2001. Family members and friends gathered at the site for the services and placed flowers in two, large, water-filled pools, thought to represent the WTC Twin Towers. The pools were constructed of wood (some of which has been preserved) and lined with plastic sheets. A sample of flowers were removed at the end of the ceremony and preserved by the Municipal Archives staff, as had been done at the 2002 "9/11/01" service (Accession 2002-062). The staff air-dried and pressed the flowers and placed them in two oversize boxes.
