World Trade Center site memorial pools for 2003

Description

On September 11, 2003, Mayor Bloomberg held a memorial service at Ground Zero for the victims of the World Trade Center (WTC) attack on September 11, 2001. Family members and friends gathered at the site for the services and placed flowers and memorabilia in two, large, water-filled pools, thought to represent the WTC Twin Towers. The pools were constructed of wood and lined with plastic sheets. Preserved, when the pools were disassembled, were the eight horizontal, wood plank framing elements (ledges). They were inscribed in ink, marker, etc. with memorial messages by service participants. Each plank measures approximately 11' x 4"L x 5"W and most of this surface is inscribed. Some of the flowers placed in the pools are preserved in Accession 2003-104 and memorabilia placed in or nearby can be found in Accession 2003-107.
