Photographs and negatives of Fire Department activities and personnel, circa 1900 to 1969

Description

The New York City professional fire department dates from 1865 when the state legislature, at the urging of the insurance industry, mandated the creation of a paid firefighting force. Before the establishment of the Department, firefighting was performed by volunteer companies. The negatives in this series were found in the FDNY Forensic Unit office in the mid 1980s. They were identified and processed through funding from the Municipal Archives Reference and Research Fund (MARRF) in 1989 and transferred to the Municipal Archives in 1990. The accession consists of 720 black and white photographs, the bulk of which are negatives on glass and film supports. Also included are a small number of prints (27) and transparencies on glass. The bulk of the images are of Fire Department activities and personnel. The accession is arranged numerically by classification numbers. Materials are arranged numerically.
