Description
This accession is comprised of correspondence and memoranda, as well as contract specifications, soundings, surveys, pier files, and materials on the Northeast Terminal, Hunts Point, and Howland Hook. Throughout its history, the Bureau of Engineering has been assigned various responsibilities including design, construction, leases and permits, and surveys. The Department of Docks, established in 1870, had exclusive control of all the wharf property belonging to the City and the regulations of privately-owned wharf property. The name of the agency has changed several times through the years: Department of Docks and Ferries in 1898, Department of Docks in 1919, Department of Marine and Aviation in 1942, Department of Ports and Terminal in 1968, Department of Ports, International Trade and Commerce in 1986, and Department of Ports and Trade in 1990. Materials are arranged alphabetically.
