Probation services were instituted in the State of New York in 1893 when the power of the courts to suspend sentences was provided by statute. Established by Executive Law Section 255, C1973, Chapter 603, effective February 1, 1974, the overall mission of the Department of Probation is to promote public safety in the City of New York, providing community-oriented justice sanctions. The case files in this accession include investigation reports, pre-sentence investigation reports, fingerprint reports, defendants pre-sentence memorandums, NYSID, NYSIS reports, investigation phase documents, chronological records, legal history, conditions of probation, supervision summary AFD, VOP warrants, PRS-DSP forms, risk and needs level, closed case documents, state probation documents, record room clearance, correspondence, memorandum and other related documents.
