Vouchers for City expenditures for 1850 to 1899
Description
In 1831, the Department of Finance was established with the Comptroller as its head. In 1938, the Office of Comptroller was set up as a separate agency. Vouchers are defined as documentary records of business transactions, specifically, a receipt or state attesting to the expenditure or receipt of money, usually accompanied by bills or other evidence of indebtedness or expenditure. Under specific accounts, these vouchers record expenditures of the agencies responsible for municipal services. The account for the expenditure is identified on the exterior of the voucher, for example, "Account of the Fire Department Fund." On the interior pages are detailed expenditures for horses and horseshoeing, for example. Arrangement of materials is chronological.
