Description

The Court of General Sessions was first established by the colonial legislature in 1691, which provided that, "Courts of Sessions of the Peace shall be kept in every respective city and county with the province of New York…" In New York City, this court was known as the Court of Quarter Sessions. The court was held in New York City by the Mayor, recorder, and aldermen, or any three of them. The material consists of declarations, liens, warrants, indictments, jury lists, and powers of attorney. There is no discernible arrangement.
