Engine Company No. 24 daily diaries for 1883 to 1960
Description
Accession consists of twenty-one 17 x 10 inch journals from engine Co. No. 24, located at 78 Morton St., Greenwich Village. The handwritten journals record in detail the quotidian activities of the company. Each volume displays the current company roster. Daily entries include the duty roster for the day, the time each fireman reported to and departed the firehouse, roll call, drills conducted, alarms received, status of equipment, and maintenance performed that day. There is also a single volume, “Fire Reports, January-November 1937," in which the company's participation in a fire is specified. Information may include items such as time alarm received, hydrants used, members of the company responding to the alarm, number of gallons of water consumed, hours and minutes spent at the fire location, number of other companies reporting, and name of the Battalion Chief. An anomalous volume spanning the period from November 1941 to April 1944 appears to be a random inventory of company supplies, fuel, repairs to equipment, personnel leaves, and purchases of United States government War Bonds. A number of the volumes have lost the bindings on their spine, and a few show water damage on interior pages. Arrangement of materials is chronological.
