Maintenance logs for Delacorte Fountain on Roosevelt Island from 1968 to 1987

Description

This accession consists of handwritten logs which contain maintenance information about the fountain. Included also are attachments such as receipts, notes, and technical pamphlets. The logs were used to document the Delacorte fountain's operation on the southern tip of Roosevelt Island. It was donated to the City in 1969 by publisher George Delacorte. There were environmental concerns over its generating a 400 foot water spray with East River water. The fountain was demolished by the firm Langan Engineering in 1994 to make way for new construction. The logs record maintenance and inspections, security, testing for pollutants in the fountain spray, and weather conditions affecting its operation. Included are contacts with the donor, who shared operating costs, public utilities, and other city agencies concerned with the operation. Arrangement of materials is chronological.
