Pier files for 1950 to 1980
Description
The Department of Docks, established in 1870, had exclusive control of all the wharf property owned by the City and the regulation of privately-owned wharf property. The name of the agency has changed several times through the years: Department of Docks and Ferries in 1898, Department of Docks in 1919, Department of Marine and Aviation in 1942, Department of Ports and Terminal in 1968, Department of Ports, International Trade and Commerce in 1986, and Department of Ports and Trade in 1990. This accession contains reports, correspondence, memoranda, contracts, work orders, and plans. There are two sequences, each arranged by pier location. The first sequence consists primarily of detailed condition reports of wharf structures including piers, bulkheads, and buildings, describing damage and deterioration with correspondence and some estimates of repairs and work orders. The condition reports were created by the agency, sometimes in collaboration with the occupant. The second sequence is cost estimates, contracts, work orders, progress reports, correspondence, and condition surveys for repairs, some to the same piers documented in the first sequence. The wharfs are in Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens and Staten Island. Materials are arranged by geographic location.
