Department of Public Works pavement drawings circa 1868 to 1915

Accession ACC-2005-100. Unprocessed

Description

The Department of Public Works, begun in 1870, was preceded by the Street Department and took over that agency's function for street maintenance. The accession consists of drawings and site plans. The material shows grading and repaving work, usually in one block segments. They show either a map of the street and intersecting blocks or a side elevation, showing grade. The drawings and plans indicate type and quantity of material to be used and the names of engineers who did the drawings and were assigned the project. They are arranged by one of several numbering systems found on the items (there is no index), by the "accession number" between 1000-9999. The numbers were assigned on a very approximate chronological basis. The drawings are in ink or graphite, with some water coloring, on heavy paper. The paper is in fair condition, with more deterioration to early material. Arranged numerically.
