Description
The Department of Sanitation was responsible for carrying out the New York City's solid waste management, including recycling, waste reduction, and the operation of waste disposal facilities. Norman Steisel was appointed Commissioner in September 1978, under the Koch Administration, and served until February 1986. The accession consists of correspondence, memoranda, notes, reports, press releases, news clippings, and printed material. It was used by the Commissioner for policy and operational reference. Correspondence is with the Mayor and other members of the administration, intra-agency staff, and with other agencies. Some material was retained from Commissioner Steisel's predecessor in the position, Anthony Vaccarello, for reference. Steisel would later serve in the Dinkins Administration as First Deputy Mayor. Arranged chronologically and then alphabetically.
