Description
This material documents Department of Sanitation equipment, facilities, and activity across the twentieth century, including images used in promotional campaigns and documenting certain tasks performed by Sanitation personnel, such as those relating to enforcing regulations, snow removal, and recycling. The photographs include staff portraits and images captured at office parties, charity and award events, staff member funerals and retirement ceremonies, and images from marches and parades of all kinds. The Fresh Kills landfill and its eventual closure, and the initial clean-up and later commemorations of 9/11 appear to be prominent subjects.
