Description

Accession consists of photographic materials dated from the 1920s to the 1960s. The files include 4" x 5" negatives, 8" x 10" film and glass plate negatives, and prints of various sizes. The majority are 4" x 5" negatives, dated between the 1930's and 1940's. About a fifth of the accession is prints. The negatives and prints are housed in acidic envelopes. The images illustrate the many activities of the Department of Sanitation, depicting collection trucks, snow removal, landfills, rat holes, accidents involving sanitation vehicles, NYC parades (Lindberg, Corrigan, Eisenhower, V.E. and V.J. Day, St. Patrick's Day, and many others), the 1937 World's Fair and other subjects. There is an early 4" x 5" glass plate negative from 1909 depicting a two horse sprinkler with broom convoy, some 1940's Bond Drives with Mayor La Guardia, and other varied treasures, such as a print of a 1899 parade scene (no negative).
