Correspondence sent to World Trade Center recovery workers in 2001 September to October
Description
The accession contains posters, banners and greeting cards, and some correspondence, sent after the World Trade Center (WTC) attack on September 11, 2001 to rescue workers, including police and firefighters, and to New Yorkers in general to offer condolences, encouragement, and support. A majority of the materials are from children, mostly from schools in Ohio, sent from a campaign called "3 Cares" conducted by a local television station WKYC. There is no clear indication how the documents arrived at the Office of Midtown Enforcement Unit, a unit that does specialized police work in Manhattan. Similar material was collected from a Post Office box, established by the Community Assistance Unit, found in accession 2003-111.
