Description

This accession includes handwritten receipts from the 1830s to the 1940s for the suppliers to New York City and other pre-consolidation municipalities of vital services such as police, fire, and sanitation, as well as specific expenditures for paving, street repair, wells, and pumps. There are receipts from municipal entities such as the Bureau of City Collections, City Auditor's Office, and the Bureau of Audit. In 1831, the Department of Finance was created with the Comptroller as its head. In 1938, the Comptroller's Office was set up as a department separate from the Department of Finance.
