Chief Medical Examiner investigation of death reports for 1939 to 1946


Description

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner was formed in 1918 as a citywide agency to replace the Office of the Coroner. The Office investigates deaths of persons who died from criminal violence, by accident, by suicide, when unattended by a physician, or in a suspicious or unusual manner. The accession consists of original case records of deaths examined by the Chief Medical Examiner. Individual files may include investigation report, notice of death, report of death, death certificate, autopsy, laboratory reports, fact sheets, suicide notes, and all correspondence relating to the cause of death. The reports are from all five boroughs and arranged by borough and thereunder numerically by case number. The Bronx records, with slight variations in documentation between them, exist in two sequences by year. The case numbers are the same assigned in Accession 1998-036, death record index "Chief Medical Examiner Accessions Record, Communication Division."
