Description

Originally a division of the New York City Human Resources Administration, the Office for Homeless and Single Room Occupancy Housing Services was established in 1986. It then became the Department of Homeless Services in 1993 when it was became a separate New York City agency. One of the agency's functions was to provide temporary emergency shelter for eligible homeless people in partnership with public and private agencies. Gordon Campbell became Commissioner in mid-1996. The accession consists of correspondence, memoranda, notes, reports, and printed material. The correspondence is intra-office, with the heads of other agencies and the Mayor's Office, and public and private social service agencies. The accession was formerly part of the RM (records management) series number 20276, Commissioner's subject files. It was divided into separate series based on each commissioner's tenure. Arranged alphabetically.
