Description

Henry J. Stern served as Commissioner of the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation during the Koch Administration, 1983-1990. He was reappointed to this position by Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani in 1994 and served as Commissioner until the end of the Giuliani Administration in February 2002. The accession consists of correspondence, notes and tracking sheets, and some attachments. The in-office name of the material was "Writers' Files." The correspondence is with city agencies and other organizations with parks and environmental related policy and operating concerns, but primarily with constituents. The constituents often have concerns with park operations, facilities, and service in individual parks. The tracking sheets indicate the department staff responder to correspondence and routing of copies to the Departments administrators. The material is arranged by the surname of the head of the division, unit, or department of the agency the subject matter was most relevant to. Position titles and names of unit were referenced to these unit head while preparing the inventory to better facilitate the original intention of the material to serve the function of a general correspondence file along Agency divisional Lines. For related material see Accession 2007-061.
