Geological maps of areas in all five boroughs of New York City circa 1850 and circa 1935 to 1941

Accession ACC-2007-090. Unprocessed - MSS. MSS papers and collections

Description

The accession consists of geological maps showing depth of soil and rock strata and borings data from the five boroughs in their entirety; several maps show individual sites. Most of the maps were created through Work Projects Administration (WPA; formerly the Works Progress Administration) projects, and/or the Borough Presidents' Topographical Bureaus and the Board of Water Supply. There are thirteen single maps and six map sets (6, 6, 3, 3, 3 and 2 maps respectively). The maps were created on many different media such as blueprint, linen, and transparencies, and were made using ink, pencil, and printing press. A few are hand colored in pencil and most are in good condition. One map is a reproduction (probably mid-19th century) of the 1767 Ratzer Map of New York City (which has topographic features); it is mounted on cardboard and is in fair-to-poor condition. The maps were in active use in the Department of Design and Construction until they were transferred to the Municipal Archives.
