First established as part of the Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs Administration (now the Department of Parks and Recreation) in 1968, the Department of Cultural Affairs became a separate agency in 1976 with responsibility for overseeing, sustaining, and promoting the New York City's cultural life and heritage and its economic impact on the City. Mary Schmidt Campbell was appointed as Commissioner of the Department of Cultural Affairs in 1987. The accession consists of correspondence, memoranda, notes, staff minutes, financial records, and printed material. Correspondence is with the Mayor, Deputy Mayor, and other members of the mayoral administration; agency heads; and members of the cultural community. The files were used by the Commissioner in planning policy for the agency and managing its day to day operations. Arranged alphabetically.
