Description
The accession consists of portions of minutes of the Board of Health. The Board of Health is governed by the Department of Health. The Board enacts the New York City Health Code and the Department of Health functions to enforce what the Board of Health decrees. The minutes often pertain to proposals for general regulatory or specific projects that are health related that were brought before the Board for approval by some institutional entity. Meetings were set for a specific date, usually once a month. The Board has broad responsibilities for monitoring public health as a legislative body, passing regulations on health matters, including the purity of food, health hazards from animals, and outbreaks of epidemics that the Department of Health enforces. The Commissioner of the Department of Health serves as the chair of the Board of Health and two of the other four members are required to be medical or public health professionals.
