First established as part of the Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs Administration (now the Department of Parks and Recreation) in 1968, the Department of Cultural Affairs became a separate agency in 1976 with responsibility for overseeing, sustaining, and promoting the New York City's cultural life and heritage and its economic impact on the City. Schuyler G. Chapin was appointed as Commissioner of the Department of Cultural Affairs in 1994. Kathleen Hughes served as Assistant Commissioner for Program Services in the Department of Cultural Affairs. As Assistant Commissioner for Program Services, Hughes oversaw the Program Division that selected and monitored institutions funded by the Department and advised the Commissioner in policy matters in this area. Selective programs in the division include the Manhattan Community Arts Fund and Arts Exposure. The accession consists of correspondence, memorandums, notes, reports, budgets, printed materials, lists, annual reports, and minutes. The minutes are of the Commissioner's Advisory Committee to the Department. Annual reports include those of the institutions funded by the Department. Correspondence is intra-departmental, as well as with cultural institutions and other city and government agencies and officials. Arranged alphabetically.
