Land grants on the Manhattan shoreline or under the Hudson, Harlem, and East Rivers for 1686 to 1907

Accession ACC-2008-109. Unprocessed - RG 035. Department of Finance

Description

The accession consists of ten libers (books or volumes of records) that contain New York City land grants on the Manhattan shoreline, or under the Hudson, Harlem and East Rivers, granted to individuals for docks and wharfage or similar uses. They are identified in six volume work by Isaac Newton Phelps Stokes, The Iconography of Manhattan Island, on page 202, under Division of Real Estate. Although the majority of land grants are for waterfront property, a small number from the 19th century are not for waterfront land. There are some hand colored (inked) parcel maps inserted in the volumes, mostly after 1792. The volumes are identified as labeled as A-K (not numbered) and are all handwritten except for a small portion of the last volume. They are in good condition. They were rebound in the 20th century, though some of those rebindings are broken. Arranged chronologically.
