Central Park Zoo photograph album for 1914

Accession ACC-2009-025. Unprocessed - MSS. MSS papers and collections

Description

The accession consists of one photograph album with approximately sixty photographs showing views of the Central Park Zoo (originally called the Central Park Menagerie) taken by Albert W. Schaad in 1914. The photographs are black-and-white prints, roughly measuring 3.5 x 4.5 inches, or smaller. This information was included in the album: "Respectfully presented to my instructor Mr. C. Schickerling. Christmas 1914. Greetings from A.W. Schaad." This could refer to Conrad Schickerling who was the president and general manager of International Incandescent Lamp Works (established in 1916) located in Union Hill, New Jersey. A.W. Schaad served as treasurer of the company (found online in a digitized copy of "The EMF Electrical Year Book" published in 1921). Views include zoo animals such as lions, tigers, camels, and elephants; zoo buildings; landscapes of Central Park and surroundings; and several photos of Schaad, including of him handling some of the animals. There is also a photo of the buffalo, Black Diamond Jr., as a baby. The photos appear to be in good condition. The album passed to Kathleen Love, who gave it to the donor, Joan Schier, for transfer to the Municipal Archives.
