Accession ACC-2009-081. Unprocessed - RG 014. New York City Council

Description

The accession consists of bound, printed volumes of the Manual of the Corporation of the City of New York, commonly called the Valentine's manual of old New York. They were published annually under the authority of the Common Council after the Clerk of the Common Council, D.T. (David Thomas) Valentine, who edited them in the mid-19th century. The format of 19th century version consists of an opening section listing New York City and other officials elected and appointed in governance, and operating agencies. The second section consists of historical articles on a wide variety of local subjects including historical operations of City infrastructure, agencies, and institutions. Fold out maps and illustrations of New York City were also included. When reissued in the 20th century, edited by historian Henry Collins Brown, the Valentine's Manual had become entirely a historical annual. Some of the manuals have been conserved. All are stored in enclosures and many are in good to excellent condition. Arranged chronologically.
