Manhattan sewer and drainage district maps circa 1871 to 1889
Description
The accession consists of approximately seventy-five maps. Each map indicates sewer and drainage lines in Manhattan in multiple block-long sections, running through a number of streets, and organized in geographic sections (districts). The maps show the pipe sections in vertical (transverse) and horizontal (along the line of the street). They show the depth of the pipes and the grade of the street section. The maps were produced by the Engineer for Sewers in Department of Public Works. One copy of each map was filed in the Department of Finance. The maps are produced on linen (coated) cloth, uncoated cloth, and paper. The linen maps are in excellent condition, the uncoated cloth maps are often ragged and show decay, the paper maps are moderately embrittled and require flattening. Geographical arrangement.
