Applications for registration of patent medicines circa 1916 to 1939

Description

The accession consists of form applications and printed material. The applications record information on the ingredients of patent (or proprietary) medicines and company information from their manufacturers. The Department reviewed the medicines for potentially harmful ingredients to approve their distribution and consumption in New York City. Attached to the applications are product boxes, labels and promotional literature on the medicines. A sample of the medicine was also sent and tested. The manufacturers were nationwide and include some still producing medicines such as Ex-Lax and Murine. The applications are arranged numerically, which approximates chronologically the date of the applications.
