New York State Supreme Court clerkship certificates for 1803 to 1840
Description
This accession consists of certificates and lists. The certificates are affirmations from practicing attorneys to the Supreme Court that a certain individual served as a law clerk in their offices, as a part of the clerk's education and training to become an attorney. The usual term of clerkship was three to four years. The certificates are handwritten and not in a standardized form. The documents further attest to the character and general education of the clerk. Several lists indicate a number of law clerks to be examined and admitted as attorneys to the Supreme Court during certain years. Most of the documents are tri-folded and the paper is embrittled. The records are arranged chronologically.
