Office of the Public Administrator case files for 1824 to 1826

Description

The Public Administrator was granted administration over an estate when the deceased person did not leave a will, could not be assigned an administrator among family members, or under other circumstances. This accession consists of inventories, claims, receipts, inquests, indemnification bonds, court orders, assignments, and legal papers. The files are organized as a series of case files for individual intestates. Some contain assignments from the Surrogate's Court to the Public Administrator, or possibly a deputy. Almost all of the files have inventories of the deceased's possessions and usually have some claims against the estate, some noting fees for settling the estate. Many of the intestates were merchant seaman who died on their way to, or in, the Port of New York. Inventories of their personal effects include clothing, bedding for sea, watches and the like. The materials are arranged alphabetically.
