"The Renaissance of City Hall" photographs for 1955

Accession ACC-2010-025. Unprocessed

Description

This accession consists of 34 black and white photographic prints. Most are 8 x 10 inches. They comprise part of the illustrations for the book "The Renaissance of City Hall: The City of New York," published in 1956 to commemorate the 1954-1955 renovation of City Hall. The photographs primarily show the reconstruction of the stone facades, structural elements, and mechanical systems in some detail, as well as views of the facades, including a notable photograph of the building enclosed in scaffolding. The photographs are identified by brief captions and usually a date. Some have been retouched to the form they appear in the book. The photographic mounting used for the printing of the book are included and stored in separate folders from the photographs. The material will be transferred to 31 Chambers Street for storage. Part of this material was accessioned as 1956-008 and 1957-008, the latter accession an inaccurate repeat of 1956-006. The phonograph records and manuscript of the book mentioned in 1956-008 was not found with the present photographs, and only 34 rather than 106 photographs were found. The photographs are arranged by the page number they appear on in the book.
