Description

This accession consists of ordinances, resolutions, correspondence, appointments and financial records. The Union Defense Fund was created in April 1861 by the Common Council. Its members included the Mayor, Comptroller, Presidents of the Board of Aldermen and Councilmen and 25 prominent citizens. It was responsible for equipping the military force of New York during the Civil War and financially supporting the families of volunteer soldiers. This accession was first inventoried in 1977, along with other Civil War-related material, and provisionally assigned an accession number that was never used. It was fully processed with a finding aid and folder-level inventory in 1994. The material is arranged alphabetically.
