Description

This accession consists of financial records. The Union Defense Fund was created in April 1861 by the Common Council. Its members included the Mayor, Comptroller, Presidents of the Board of Aldermen/Councilmen, and 25 "prominent" citizens. It was responsible for equipping the military force of New York during the Civil War and financially supporting the families of volunteer soldiers. This accession was first inventoried in 1977, along with other Civil War-related material that comprise accessions 2010-071 through 2010-079. The material is arranged numerically.
