Description

This accession consists of three bound registers of ships arriving in New York Harbor kept for the purposes of assessing those ships bonding and port fees. The pieces of information collected varied across these volumes, which were recorded in different years. All document the name of the ship, its class (size), its captain's name, and from where it arrived. All note the ships' bonding status or the fees collected. The 1849 volume notes to whom the cargo is consigned. The 1829-1833 and 1849 volumes have details on the size and origins of the crews, the former volume has more detail on the nation of origin of the crews, noting the number of crewmen from each of over a dozen mostly European countries. The volumes are arranged chronologically.
