Department of Public Markets correspondence letterbooks for 1920 to 1929
Description
The Department of Public Markets, changed to the Department of Markets in 1938, was established in 1850 as a Bureau of the Department of Streets and Lamps. The accession consists of letterbooks containing outgoing correspondence of the commissioner, deputy commissioner, and other administrators in the Department. The correspondence is with occupants of Public Market stalls, employees and prospective employees, other city agencies, and the Mayor's Office. There is an alphabetical index by name of correspondent in the front of each volume. The letters are entered in roughly chronological order in each volume.
