Photographs of sites proposed for development for 1920 to 1928

Description

This accession consists of approximately 500 photographs apparently taken as documentation of sites proposed for development, in various boroughs. The photographs are marked with numbers that appear to be related to the site or project (several differing views of a site will have the same number). They are marked with dates, but the identification of the locations is inconsistent. Proposed land usage is often not indicated. Most photographs show vacant lots or roughly-fenced yards, but some show frame buildings in good condition. Several groups of photographs are marked on the back with a rubber stamp reading "Bureau of Food and Drugs, Office of the Director" and include a date. Some of these have notes indicating a connection to a poultry market or a "proposed chicken market." The majority of sites, which are documented by photos without a bureau stamp may have had a different intended purpose. Much of the interest of these photos is in their portrayal of marginal areas of the city, streets far from fashionable neighborhoods, etc., sometimes incidentally showing local people going about daily life. The photographs were "found in collection." The boxes were marked "tri-folded photos" which is exactly what they were. Conservation unfolded the photos and placed them in photo envelopes. The photos are not arranged in any particular way.
