Brooklyn Borough President photographic materials, circa 1990-2013


Description

These records consist of photographic materials created by the Brooklyn Borough President’s Office, mostly during the Marty Markowitz administration. These photographs are mostly of events in Brooklyn during the 2000's, including concerts, press conferences, grand openings, celebrity/dignitary visits, charitable work, cultural celebrations, education/public school related events, and community clubs and organizations. There are also a significant number of photographs related to special projects of the Borough President including public health initiatives, public outreach campaigns, beautification projects like the Greenest Block contest, and exhibits. Many of the folders with physical prints have materials related to planning/conducting the shoots or publications made with the photos included with them. There is a wide variety of events that were thoroughly photographed annually over the full span of years represented here, such as Chinese celebrations of Lunar New Year, West Indian Day Parades, LGBT Pride events, and Heritage Celebration events for Hispanic, Haitian, Turkish, Russian, Asian, Italian, Jewish, Polish, Greek, Mexican, Caribbean, Lebanese, and Latino heritage.

Extent

37 cubic feet : 11 cubic feet of compact discs stored in jewel cases. the bulk of the remaining 27 cubic feet are photographic prints, 35mm slides in sleeve binders, and associated negatives. there are also contact sheets, photographs printed on printer paper, ephemera related to conducting photoshoots, and publications (most of them clipping albums or ephemera created using the photographic materials).

1.6 terabytes : the bulk of the files are in jpg format but there are also tifs, microsoft excel spreadsheets, microsoft word documents, and pdfs. “borough presidents past” were from kathryn kirk’s workstation; the born digital files in “photography_ii” are from kirk’s assistant’s workstation; and the born digital files in folders titled “i” and “ii” were kept on a shared external storage device.
