Description
This accession consists of functional files created during the course of the Mayor's Commission for the United Nations and Consular Corps' operations. It is a record of the various services provided to the personnel at the United Nations and Consular Corps. On January 21, 1962, the Mayor appointed a personal representative to the United Nations for the purpose of strengthening the city's ties with the United Nations. On February 14, 1966, the Mayor's Commission for the United Nations was confirmed by Executive Order No. 8. Its duties are to work closely with the United States Mission of the United Nations and other officials to coordinate municipal services available to United Nations personnel except receptions and similar responsibilities vested in the Department of Public Events. In 1970, the scope of the Commission was broadened to include aid to the Consular Corps in the City of New York. It served 126 United Nations member states and 80 Consular members.
