Overseers of the Poor, House of Correction, Workhouse and Poorhouse, 1758-1818

Scope and Contents

This series contains Admissions, Discharges and Death records and Census records. While similar in content, the records of Admissions, Discharges and Death contain labeled columns giving information about date of admittance, name, age, where from, occupation and why sent to the Almshouse. The Census ledger records a list of names, ages, where born and the reason for being in the Almshouse. Information overlaps between the two subseries. Arrangement is chronological and alphabetical. The early years of the collection have large gaps in record keeping. The bulk of the Admissions, Discharges and Death records come after 1832.
