The New York County Supreme Court insolvency assignments and index dates from 1754-1908. Series 1: Insolvency assignments spans 1768-1908, with the majority dating from 1798-1886 and 1900. Series 2: Insolvency assignments index spans 1754-1863 but is not inclusive of all people documented in Series 1. The collection documents insolvent debtors, their debts, and legal actions taken against them in response to their insolvency (bankruptcy). Actions included imprisonment (imprisonment for debt was abolished in the New York State Legislature in 1831) and/or selling off their real estate and personal property to pay off creditors.
