Abstract
Ardolph L. Kline served as Acting Mayor for the City of New York after the unexpected death of Mayor William J. Gaynor in September 1913. This collection consists of materials generated by the daily business of his brief administration.

Scope and Content Note
This collection consists of materials generated by the daily business of the administration of Acting Mayor, Ardolph L. Kline. The bulk of the records consist of correspondence between the Office of the Mayor and various city agencies and departments. Also included are reports, petitions, bills, speeches, and proclamations issued by Kline in his role as Mayor. A scrapbook completes this collection.
Biographical/Historical Information
Ardolph L. Kline was born in New Jersey in 1858. After a brief career in retail and in the military, Kline was elected an alderman in Brooklyn. In 1912 he became the Vice-chairman of the Board of Aldermen, and when Mitchel, the elected President, resigned, Kline became President of the Board of Aldermen. In September 1913, Mayor Gaynor unexpectedly died, and Kline served as Acting Mayor for the rest of Gaynor's term, until the end of 1913. He later became the City's Tax Commissioner as well as a Republic representative to Congress. Kline died in 1930.
