Scope and Content Note

The collection consists of fifty-five glass lantern slides depicting scenes of New York City, circa 1880-1899. Included are black and white images showing Central Park, Brooklyn Bridge and other New York City-area bridges, the New York Botanical Garden in the Bronx, waterfront scenes showing piers and boats, street scenes of areas in Manhattan, public events, and buildings in Manhattan.

Biographical/Historical Information

This collection of lantern slides was found in the basement of a home on West 13th Street in Manhattan by the De Gregario family who bought the home in 1967. It is believed that the previous owner of the home, Robert Devlin, was the custodian of the lantern slides. According to property records in the New York City Municipal Archives collections, the Devlin family owned the home since 1881. Several slides are attributed to Robert J. Devlin. Other slides are attributed to W. T. Colbron, H.T. Duffield, Frank F. Cobb, H.B. Reid, and A. Simpson who were members of the Camera Club of New York.
