Scope Note
: The Town of New Utrecht ("Nieuw Utrecht") was established in 1652, granted status as a village in 1657, and in 1661 was provided its own charter by Peter Stuyvesant. It was annexed to Brooklyn in 1894. Today, It is a neighborhood within the area of Bensonhurst.
