The records of the Almshouse Ledger Collection represent the activities of the institutions under the purview of various city departments on Blackwell’s Island. Records in this collection date from 1758 to 1952, with the bulk of the records falling between 1832 and 1925. Scope and Contents:
This series contains Admissions, Discharges and Death records and Census records. While similar in content, the records of Admissions, Discharges and Death contain labeled columns giving information about date of admittance, name, age, where from, occupation and why sent to the Almshouse. The Census ledger records a list of names, ages, where born and the reason for being in the Almshouse. Information overlaps between the two subseries. Arrangement is chronological and alphabetical.
